Day Two-Humans and our effect on the Environment
Last class we learned about the types of plants and animals found in the forest around us. To day we are going to learn about how we interact with our environment. Today I will assign you a task, either air, water, or earth. Work on your task, then get together with your group to discuss what you have learned.
There are two ways we can affect the world around us. Positively and negatively. Let's explore those together.
First, lets see how we affect the air.
Watch this video. (note to students, turn your volume up, I will be listening to make sure you don't stray!)
Check out this poster on the air cycle, what is something new you learned?
Download and print this page, follow the directions to make your own clean air fortune teller.
Fill out this form on air pollution.
Now let's check out the Air Quality Index. Click here, and read the first paragraph under the title "What is the AQI?" (it's on the third page)
What does this mean to us? Click here, type in our zip code and check our air quality index rating.
Now click here, and see what that rating means. Go through all sections, even the game!.
Fill out this form about the air quality index.
What are some things we can do to positively affect the air quality? Visit Airville, and find some good things we can do for the air.
Write up some ideas that you can share with the group to improve our air quality (do this in your journal). Don't forget to remind the group of some bad things also.
What about water?
Water gets both polluted and wasted. Go here, play the game and see if you are a water water or a water saver.
For the water wasters, click here and find out why it's important to conserve our water.
What are some things we can do to conserve water? Click on the water droplets along the bottom of this page to learn things you can do on a daily basis to conserve water.
Fill out this form about water conservation.
Now we've seen some water conservation, what about pollution?
What is water pollution? Read the first paragraph on this page, then look at the picture to the left. Does that water look clean or dirty?
Click here to find out different causes of water pollution.
Read here to find some ways to help keep out water clean.
Fill out this form about water pollution.
Write up some ideas that you can share with the group about ways we can improve our water quality and conserve water (do this in your journal). Share your ideas with the rest of your group.
Now for the Earth
Here we are going to focus on the impact that trash has on our environment. We will also look at how the ways we use energy affect the Earth.
There are different ways to dispose of trash. Click here and read the sections labeled "Landfills" and "Incineration"
One way to reduce the amount of trash is to recycle. Visit Recycle City, click on a section and see how that section can work to recycle.
What types of items can be recycled? Click here for a "beginner's guide" but remember to check with your local waste management to see what items they accept!
Play this recycling sort and decide what items should be recycled, thrown away, or composted.
Fill out this form, and tell me a little about trash and recycling.
Let's talk about energy. There are different types of energy sources. Click here to learn a little about them. Pick one or two from each category to learn more about.
It's important to conserve energy. Click here and choose, "Your Planet Needs You" then select "What can Happen." Click on the stars to learn about what can happen to our supply of energy. Afterwards click on the piggy bank or "Saving Energy" to see ways you can save energy in your own room!
Click here for a list of simple ways to conserve energy.
Fill out this form about energy types and conservation.
Write up some ideas to share with your group about ways that we can conserve energy and why it is important to do so (do this in your journal).
